Why do the manuals ask for liquid measurements in cm rather than ml? All of the liquid measuring devices properly use ml, but the experiments ask you to measure in cm. am I supposed to use a ruler to mark cm on the side of a test tube, or can I assume the instructions should be asking liquid to be measured in ml?

You are correct, usually liquids are measured in ml, however in this case, to measure cm, simply hold the test tube to a ruler (in some manuals a ruler is printed in the manual).
