Graphic Designer

Thames & Kosmos is a leading designer, producer, and publisher of educational toys, including STEM kits and board games, based in Providence, RI. Our products are sold through toy, game, book, and school market channels around the world.

We are looking for a talented, inspired, full-time graphic designer to join our in-house design team and perform a wide variety of product- and marketing-related design functions. Our design team is small, so this is a great opportunity for a designer to have input and involvement on all kinds of projects.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following: 
·     Design, layout, and typesetting of content-rich instruction manuals (books) for our products
·     Design of visual advertisements for print, web, and social media
·     Design of marketing materials such as sell sheets, presentation decks, promotional items, and catalogs
·     Design and layout of retail packaging for our products, including structure, pack-out, and graphics
·     Design of signage, displays, and other merchandising materials for retail stores and tradeshows
·     Photography and creation of beautiful product images and for our sales channels and customers
·     Illustration for product packaging, manuals, and marketing materials
·     Updates to the company website, both updating/editing copy and creation/management of images
·     Working with external partners (manufacturers, licensors) to create designs 
·     Sending art files to our partners and customers
·     Pre-press, file preparation, and sending of art files to printers
·     Ordering and stock keeping of design supplies including inks, paper, and other materials
·     Contributing to product design and branding efforts
·     Assisting sales and marketing teams with image requests
·     Assistance with the creation of product videos

Design skills and experience
·     Strong visual design skills including understanding of composition, organization of information, hierarchy, use of type, and color theory
·     Ability to critique your own work and others’ work, and absorb and apply feedback
·     Refined sense of design, knowing what looks professional and what does not
·     Keen eye and attention to detail to avoid mistakes, whether they are graphical errors, typographical errors, formatting mistakes in text
·     Ability to identify the key features of a product and create a series of images to tell the story of the product
·     Ability to understand, work with, and adhere to style guides, as well as develop new style guides
·     Ability to creatively use available graphic assets to create new and more useful imagery
·     Ability to do competitive research and analysis of other products/packages/designs on the market during the design process
·     Ability to work within defined schedules and to meet artwork deadlines
·     Ability to work with large (in file size, and dimensions) and complex packaging files in Illustrator and Photoshop
·     Experience laying out larger documents (50+ pages) in InDesign, working with type, working with raster and vector graphics
·     Ability to work with a small team; take direction and feedback and incorporate it into the documents
·     Superior InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat skills. Other programs are a plus
·     Digital photography, lighting, and image retouching skills
·     Manual crafting skills to cut and build packaging mockups and prototypes
·     Experience preparing and packaging files for printing
·     Understanding of color profiles, offset printing, and experience with how images on the monitor translate into printed images
·     Experience with ecommerce platforms (Shopify), coding abilities/theme customization skills a plus
·     Mac OS, Microsoft Office Suite, Google docs, email skills

·     Creativity, the ability to creatively create content, even with limited resources
·     Organized and highly motivated with a high attention to detail
·     Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; especially when it comes to design discussions
·     Sound critical thinking and problem-solving skills
·     Self-starter who can work independently, but knows when to appropriately bring management team into the decision-making process
·     Fast learner; can learn, retain, and apply information quickly and efficiently 
·     Ability to remain calm, positive, and effective in high-energy, high-expectation situations of urgency 
·     A true interest in Thames & Kosmos products and general mission
·     German language skills are a plus but certainly not required. We work closely with our parent company, Kosmos, in Germany. Many files are adapted from German into English.

·     This position is full-time and primarily in-house in Providence, RI. Remote working is a possibility on rare occasions with approval of management
·     Salary commensurate with experience. Full-time, based on 40-hour workweek, regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm), bi-weekly payroll.
